More than 70 per cent of journalists killed in 2023 are Palestinians:
More than 70% of journalists slain globally in 2023 were
correspondents from Palestine. This was noted in a fresh report that was
released on Thursday. They were killed in an Israeli attack on Gaza.
Of the 99 journalists and media professionals the Committee to Protect Journalists
(CPJ) identified last year, 77 were slain in the Israel-Hamas conflict, the
organization reported in its report.
The majority of the dead (72), according to the Committee to Protect
Journalists' annual report, were Palestinian journalists who were murdered by
Israeli forces. In addition, two Israeli and three Lebanese journalists are
among the deceased.
According to CPJ CEO Jody Ginsberg, this is unheard of on VOA. Our reliance on
Palestinian journalists is absolute. They are providing us with news and
information from sources other than just the battle.
In 2024, there will still be journalist deaths related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. As of February 14 of current year, 11 more Palestinian journalists had perished in the conflict, according to CPJ data.
"There's a reason why journalists are dying," remarked Ginsburg. Our
work is important because of this.
According to Ginsburg, there is a direct correlation between the climate in
which journalist assassinations persist and the failure to hold those
responsible for them accountable.
Martínez Jogo, who killed one of the worst journalists in Cameroon last year,
is free to roam about without consequences. According to CPJ, Jogo's body was
discovered in January 2023 on the outskirts of Yaounde, the country's capital,
naked and severely disfigured.
Ginsburg claims that a lack of protection caused several journalists to leave the nation as a result of the horrific killings.
Ginsburg went on to say that Israel contributes to the issue of impunity. Israeli
police have killed at least 20 journalists in the last 22 years, including 18
Palestinian journalists, according to a CPJ study from May 2023. For these
killings, nobody was prosecuted.
